Why We Build Forward Green
Lawn Story Short
Before we found our dream home in the beautiful neighbourhood of Ottawa South, we lived in a condo with minimal outdoor space (a balcony). We have a senior cat, Turi, who had not been able to jump up to all his favourite high places. To keep Turi active, we started taking him for walks in a nearby park, and he found great joy being outdoors with his humans. When we outgrew the condo and started house-hunting, we decided one of the ‘must have’ features was a decent sized backyard.
We moved into our new home in the fall, and by the following spring we realized that the “lawn” was really more weeds than grass. Turi loved being out in the yard with us, but judging from the look on his face, he didn’t enjoy walking through the weeds and severely depleted soil surface.
We fought the weeds tirelessly, and we won! After just one season, we were able to tame most of the weeds, and gradually introduced stronger grass varieties to the backyard. It brings us joy watching Turi walking through soft, sunlit new grass.
Our Neighbours Noticed
Our relentlessness and the dramatic transformations of our lawn and garden didn’t go unnoticed. Standing by the shared fence in the backyard, our neighbour told us, “It looks the nicest it’s ever been in the thirty years we live here!”
To our surprise, several neighbours and friends started to reach out to us for recommendations and even asked if we would be willing to help them with their lawns. They said, with us, they knew exactly what they would be getting because they had seen the results with their own eyes. We were deeply flattered. At that point we would be lying if we said we had not been thinking (long and hard) about starting a company doing what we are passionate about.
We were deeply grateful for the accountability and affirmation that our neighbours and friends have given us. The opportunities to improve the appearance and value of other people’s properties pushed us to raise the bar, and hold ourselves to high standards.
That was the last push we needed to start Forward Green. The rest is history.
